A New Year--Same Old Politics

It shouldn't be news to anyone that the country is essentially split on many policy levels: political, economic, social, environment, the role of government etc.

An indication of this split was seen in this week's acrimonious debate and last minute settlement to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff". Some may view this agreement as a positive sign. I do not.

What the agreement accomplished was the bare minimum to avoid a large tax increase for 99% of taxpayers--it essentially kicked the can down the road for the rest of our problems. This result reflects the November election which was not one of change but one of status quo.

What is left to address is an unsustainable debt, the debt limit, sequestration, a reduction in spending, tax reform and an overhaul of entitlement programs. That is just for starters. Longer range, the country would be well advised to pass some constitutional amendments regarding term limits, a balanced budget    requirement and some clearer guidelines on the limits of the federal government especially its power of taxation and role vis-a-vis the states.

That is a tall order which will not come to fruition unless and until the public becomes more educated as to the real nature of the threat to our national well being. Only then will our so called political "leaders" take notice and start to make the very necessary changes that we need.

In the interim, we should expect more of the same: more acrimony, deadlock and minimal agreements which will only kick the can down the road yet again.

  1. The public become more educated? We just experienced an election and clearly, the public is not interested in facts nor seeking the truth the media refuses to report. Within the Catholic Church, from February to November, the church "attempted" to educate their parishioners. The result; 2% swing away from Obama and Obama even mandated the church violate their moral principles! The "brainwashing" of the American people began many years ago via the liberal socialists employed within our school systems and media. Even in some ways, at least, within the church. "We" now teach our children; there are no losers. Everybody gets a trophy. Graduations begin at the kindergarten level. Proms which once were for juniors and seniors in high school, now are done at the junior high level complete with limo's.....Reading about today's typical college students (from a survey and study), these students think of themselves as much "better" than their grades suggest. Narcissism? "We've" been programming such thoughts since kindergarten. Along comes Obama and further filling their "minds" with (you can do anything "food"), and Uncle Sam is there to help you....How easy to give a grand speech at a college campus....Did anybody ever see Obama give a speech in front of a Government Un-employment Bureau? I hate to say it, but IMO, the kicking the can down the road will continue unabated until the road takes a turn and the can keeps going straight and off the cliff. Look at how democrits have destroyed Detroit. Look at California? Liberalism "employs" an end justifies the means mentality. Right vs. wrong, not in the thought process. Christianity and the Constitution, the basis of our government, are now seen as living objects and/or "in the way" of progress. Keep your guns oiled and your powder dry. Collapse and anarchy will replace Christianity and the Constitution in America. We know not when yet the Scottish philosopher, Tyler, outlined the demise of democracy. His words are coming true....

I said that we wouldn't get out of this mess "--unless and until the public becomes more educated as to the real nature of the threat__". I don't presume to know if that will happen. One can only pray that the electorate comes to its senses very soon (and that capable leaders will be there to actually lead the country in the right direction). The possible alternatives are too awful to speculate.

    1. Norm,
I agree with your thoughts and simply added some of my thoughts as well. Did you get to read the article I sent which discussed the recent results of the college survey? I can remember going back over 15 years ago, having to use the services of an attorney who told me: "I need to hire another attorney for my office and these law grads want a company car, not any company car, a BMW. They do not want to work weekends either." 15 years ago!!! Hope to see you tomorrow, KD
